Very Kate Middleton! Penelope Cruz wears white lace to Pirates London premiere

By Sarah Bull

All white on the night: Penelope Cruz appears to have taken inspiration from Kate Middleton's wedding dress in her white lace dress by Givenchy Haute Couture by Riccardo Tisci at the Pirates Of The Caribbean: On Stranger Tides premiere

It had been said that Kate Middleton's wedding dress would influence bridalwear for years to come.

But it seems her Alexander McQueen lace gown is influencing more than that, as Penelope Cruz showed when she arrived at the premiere of Pirates Of The Caribbean: On Stranger Tides in London last night wearing a full-length white lace dress.

The 37-year-old star looked stunning in the white Givenchy Haute Couture by Riccardo Tisci gown, which featured zip detailing on the front and sides, which she teamed with gold accessories and poker straight hair.

Cruz was just one of the stars to attend the premiere, held at London's Westfield shopping centre in Shepherd's Bush, and appeared in good spirits as she posed on the bright blue carpet.

Her co-star Johnny Depp arrived to a chorus of hysterical screaming from his thousands of female fans, and cut a sharp appearance, in contrast to his sometimes scruffy style, in a smart dark grey suit and green shirt.

In the new Pirates film, Cruz plays Angelica, the daughter of Blackbeard, played by Ian McShane, and an old flame of Depp's character Captain Jack Sparrow.

The pair then embark on a mission together to try to find the fabled Fountain Of Youth.

And while the movie is full of exciting action sequences and explosive special effects, Cruz was actually pregnant during filming.

But she said the cast and crew on the film ensured her safety at all times, and added that her dancing training helped with the fight sequences.

Short and sweet: Kerry Katona, 90210 actress Jessica Lowndes and TV presenter Jameela Jamil all opt for pretty minidresses

She said: 'It helped that I was a dancer for so many years and worked on the fight choreography for two months before I was pregnant.

'I really knew all the fights because director Rob Marshall put them together almost as a dance the way we had trained for Nine. That helped, and when we shot, I never did anything dangerous.'

Producer Jerry Bruckheimer said of Cruz: 'She worked very hard. She's an amazing actress. We're so proud of her that she did this while she was pregnant.'

Date night: Ian McShane and his wife Gwen Humble, and star Sam Claflin and his girlfriend pose for shots

But things didn't go as smoothly for Depp, who plays Captain Jack Sparrow in the films, as he ended up with an injury after shooting a particularly difficult stunt.

He said: 'I had a little bit of a physical ailment. I must have done something to my back during a stunt and ended up with this bad sciatic situation. It was this horrible, grinding electricity going through me.

'But I kept shooting; there was no choice. I’d just limp on set. It was monstrous, man - so horrible that I actually started to like it! It was bad, and I had it a good three weeks to a month.

Guest of honour: Johnny Depp poses with nine-year-old schoolgirl Beatrice Delap, whose school he paid a surprise visit to during filming last year

'But I got used to it and kind of missed it when it was gone.'

Ian McShane, who plays Blackbeard in the film, said it was 'nice to be home again' in the UK for some of the filming.

He said: 'We had a great time. It's a great way to spend six months of your life. It was nice to get offered a job! It's always nice.'

King's Speech star Geoffrey Rush said he had enjoyed making his fourth Pirates film and hoped there were many more to come.

Rush, who plays Barbossa in the series, said: 'The fact that the writers keep giving me all of these new transformational qualities, it just provides new stuff to play with, and I can discover just how evil or sometimes how idiotic he can be.'

It was the first Pirates Of The Caribbean film for Rob Marshall, who described Depp as 'exquisite'.

He said: 'We were ready for a whole new beginning and it's a really exciting cast.

Everything is very fresh about it. There's a real clear narrative to the film. It's just a fun, exciting adventure. Making it was an adventure too.'

Nine-year-old Beatrice Delap was guest of honour at the premiere having first met Depp at her primary school.

The actor, in his Captain Jack outfit, paid a surprise visit to Meridian Primary School while filming in Greenwich after Beatrice wrote a letter asking him to rescue her from lessons.

She was given pride of place on the blue carpet and was hugged by the film stars as they arrived at the premiere.

Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides is due for release in the UK on May 18th.

Bright and beautiful: Lizzie Cundy and Lady Victoria Hervey opt for colourful outfits to match the bright carpet

Fans: Many of the fans at London's Westfield dressed up as Captain Jack Sparrow for the occasion
